How does Visiby calculate AI visibility?

Short answer: Visiby does not boil AI visibility down to one composite score. It reports a small set of separate, auditable metrics, each with a stated numerator and denominator: mention rate, owned citation rate, share of voice, mention position, and matched-cohort change between runs.

The unit behind every rate is one answer: one prompt, on one engine, in one run. Only completed answers count. Failed and not-run answers are excluded from both sides of every fraction, and prompts that contain your own brand name are excluded too, because an answer to a branded question naming you says little about your visibility. When a rate has no eligible answers, Visiby shows “—” instead of 0%, because 0% would mean you were measured and never appeared.

In brief: mention rate is the share of completed answers that name your brand, and owned citation rate is the share that cite a page on your own domain. Share of voice is your share of all brand mentions, so the rows for all brands add up to 100%. Mention position ranks brands by the order they are first named, so “#2 of 4 brands” means one brand came before yours; lower is better. Matched-cohort change compares two runs using only the same prompts on the same engines that completed in both, in percentage points.

Mention rate

Completed answers that name your brand ÷ completed answers. It is calculated per engine and pooled across engines. Every brand has its own mention rate, so the rates do not add up to 100% across brands.

Owned citation rate

Completed answers that cite at least one page on your own domain ÷ completed answers. It uses the same eligible answers as mention rate.

Share of voice

Your share of all brand mentions across the run’s completed answers. Unlike mention rate, share of voice is relative: the rows for all brands add up to 100%. See the full definitions.

Mention position

In each answer, brands are ranked by the order in which they are first named, so “#2 of 4 brands” means one brand was named before yours out of four. Your average position is the mean across answers that name you, rounded to one decimal. Answers that do not name you are left out of the average, so it describes where you rank when you appear. A lower number is better.

Matched-cohort change

When Visiby compares two runs, it compares like with like. Only answers for the same prompt wording on the same engine that completed in both runs are included, and the change is reported in percentage points (pp). Prompts whose wording changed between runs are excluded. The tooltip shows how many answers were matched, so you can see how much of the headline sample the change is based on.

How numbers are shown

  • Percentages are shown to one decimal place; some overview views use two.
  • “—” means there was nothing to measure, for example no eligible answers. 0 means you were measured and the value really is zero.
  • Charts that show change over time need at least two runs with data.

Frequently asked questions

Does Visiby have a single AI visibility score?

No. Visiby reports separate metrics (mention rate, owned citation rate, share of voice, mention position and matched-cohort change) instead of a weighted composite score, so every number can be traced back to the answers behind it.

Why are branded prompts excluded from mention rate?

A prompt that already contains your brand name will almost always produce an answer that names you. Counting those answers would inflate your mention rate without showing whether AI engines recommend you unprompted, so Visiby excludes them and the tooltip shows how many were left out.

Do failed AI answers lower my metrics?

No. If an engine fails to return an answer, that answer is excluded from both the numerator and the denominator. An outage reduces the sample size; it never counts as a loss.

What does a negative change in mention position mean?

Mention position is a rank, so a lower number is better. A negative change means your average position moved up, towards #1.
