An answer engine gives you the answer; a search engine gives you a list of places to look. For a business, that changes what being found means: your page has to be used or cited inside the answer, not only ranked. The work of earning that is called AEO (answer engine optimization), and it is one part of improving AI search visibility. Updated 1 November 2026.
An answer engine reads a question, finds or recalls information, and writes a reply. Many now search the web first and link the pages they used.
OpenAI launched ChatGPT search on 31 October 2024 with the line “Get fast, timely answers with links to relevant web sources” (OpenAI). Google describes AI Overviews as a way to “help people get to the gist of a complicated topic or question more quickly”, and says AI Mode “is particularly helpful for queries where further exploration, reasoning, or complex comparisons are needed” (Google Search Central).
The idea is older than chatbots. Featured snippets and voice assistants also answer instead of listing pages. AI tools made the answers longer and added source links.
A search engine ranks pages and leaves the reading to you. An answer engine does the reading and hands you a summary.
| Search engine | Answer engine | |
|---|---|---|
| What you get back | A ranked list of pages, plus features such as maps and videos | A written answer, often with links to sources |
| Who does the reading | You open pages and compare them | The engine reads sources and writes the summary |
| How it finds sources | Ranks whole pages for the words you typed | May run several related searches and link the pages that support each part of the answer |
| What a win looks like | A high ranking and a click | Being named or cited in the answer |
| How you measure it | Rankings, impressions and clicks | Mentions and citations across a fixed set of questions |
The line is blurry. Google Search is both: it ranks pages and, for some questions, writes an answer above them. Google says its AI features may work by “issuing multiple related searches across subtopics and data sources”, then linking pages that support the answer.
Three words help when you measure answer engines. A mention is when the answer names your brand. A recommendation is when it presents you as the pick. A citation is when it links your page as a source.
Here is one real question from our own checks, asked in ChatGPT and then in Google. We logged what came back each time.
| Question (as typed) | What does answer engine optimization mean, and how is it different from GEO? |
|---|---|
| Opened with | A one-sentence definition of AEO, then an example question |
| Answer engines it named | Google's AI-powered search experiences, ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot and voice assistants |
| Format | Definitions, a comparison table, a worked example and a bottom line |
| Sources linked | 2: a marketing software company's blog and a business tech publisher |
| Visiby named | No |
The answer began: “AEO is the practice of optimizing your content so that AI-powered tools, search engines, and digital assistants can easily find it, understand it, and use it to answer people’s questions.” The two linked sources were the only pages a reader was invited to visit.
We then typed the same question into Google. One results page did both jobs: an AI Overview answered at the top, and the classic list of pages sat underneath.
| Answer engine part | Search engine part | |
|---|---|---|
| Where on the page | At the top, as an AI Overview | Below it, as ranked web results |
| What it returned | A definition, an AEO vs GEO comparison and a closing question | 9 web results, 2 sponsored results and a People Also Ask box with 4 questions |
| Sources shown | 5 source chips: Reddit, Wikipedia and 3 company websites | Each result is its own page to open |
| Visiby | Not named | Not listed on page 1 |
The AI Overview began: “Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is the practice of structuring content so that search engines, voice assistants, and AI platforms can pull it as a direct, concise answer to a user’s question.” Sponsored results are not counted as sources.
How we asked: ChatGPT free, signed out, model not shown, 23 October 2026 at 16:57 India time, from India. Google: 1 November 2026 at about 22:15 India time, signed out, set to US English (hl=en, gl=us), from India. Each is one run on one day. The same question can get a different answer next time, and the runs show what appeared, not why.
Answer engines change where the reading happens. Pew Research Center found that people who saw a Google AI summary clicked a regular result in 8% of visits, against 15% without one, and clicked a link inside the summary in 1% of visits (March 2025 data, Pew Research Center). Google disputes the study’s method.
So a buyer can learn about your category, and even about you, without visiting your site. Being named and cited becomes a result worth tracking on its own. Our page on SERP features covers the click data in more detail.
