In-Depth Guide

How to Track Your Brand in ChatGPT (2026 Guide)

More buyers now start vendor research inside AI assistants than on Google for some categories. If ChatGPT doesn't mention your brand when someone asks for recommendations, you're invisible at the exact moment of choice. This guide shows you how to check whether your brand appears in ChatGPT — first the free manual way, then how to track it automatically over time.

What "showing up in ChatGPT" actually means

There are two different things to measure:

  • Mentions — ChatGPT names your brand in its answer.
  • Citations — ChatGPT links to your website as a source.

You want both. A mention builds awareness; a citation sends traffic and signals authority.

Method 1: The free manual check (10 minutes)

You can get a rough read today, at no cost.

  1. Open a Temporary Chat. In ChatGPT, start a Temporary Chat (or turn Memory off, or log out). This is critical — if ChatGPT remembers you, it will mention your brand because you told it about it, not because it genuinely recommends you. That gives a false positive.
  2. Turn on web search / the thinking model. Ask a question a real buyer would ask.
  3. Ask buyer-style prompts, not your brand name. For example: "best [your category] tools 2026", "[category] for [your customer type]", "alternatives to [a competitor]". Do NOT type your own name — you're testing discovery.
  4. Record three things per prompt: Were you mentioned? Were you cited (linked)? Who was mentioned instead?
  5. Repeat across engines. Run the same prompts in Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, and Claude. Coverage differs a lot by engine. (Testing Google specifically? See our companion guide: How to track your brand in Google AI Overviews & AI Mode.)

Why the manual method isn't enough

  • It's a single snapshot. AI answers change daily and vary between runs.
  • It doesn't scale. Ten prompts across five engines by hand is slow; a real buyer journey has dozens of prompts.
  • It doesn't tell you why. You see that a competitor was cited, but not which page or structure earned it.

Method 2: Track it automatically

To monitor visibility over time and understand why competitors win, use an AI-visibility (AEO) tool. A good tracker will:

  • Run a fixed set of buyer prompts on a schedule across every major engine.
  • Report your mention rate and citation rate over time.
  • Show competitor share-of-voice on the same prompts.
  • Reveal the exact pages AI engines cite, so you can see what to build.
  • Flag technical issues that block AI crawlers from reading your site.

Visiby does this across all five major engines — ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, and Claude — and turns the findings into a prioritized action plan.

What to do once you know your score

Tracking is step one. To actually appear more often:

  • Publish citable pages. AI engines cite pages with clear headings, direct answers near the top, lists, and FAQ sections. Structure beats length.
  • Get on third-party lists. Models build their shortlist from "best tools" roundups, Reddit, and review sites (like G2). Being named there gets you into the answer.
  • Fix your brand entity. Make sure AI models understand who you are — consistent naming across your site, an AI-info page, and structured data.
  • Cover the buyer's real questions. Map the prompts buyers actually ask and make sure a strong page answers each one.

Frequently asked questions

Can I see if my brand is in ChatGPT for free? Yes — open a Temporary Chat, turn on web search, and ask buyer-style prompts without naming yourself. It's a rough single snapshot, not ongoing tracking.

Why does ChatGPT mention my brand when I ask but not when others do? Because ChatGPT's memory remembers your past chats. Always test in a Temporary Chat or logged out, or the result is biased in your favor.

How often should I check? AI answers change frequently. A monthly manual check is a minimum; automated weekly tracking is far more reliable.

Which engines should I track besides ChatGPT? Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, and Claude — coverage and citations differ significantly between them.

How do I get ChatGPT to cite my website? Publish pages that answer buyer questions directly with clear structure (headings, lists, FAQs), earn mentions on third-party lists and review sites, and make your brand entity unambiguous.
